Brother of murder victim rips media for focus on "Hiccup Girl"

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM)-  "He was a quiet guy. He wouldn't hurt a soul." Those are the words that Javon Merrit used to describe his brother Shannon Griffin who was killed over the weekend in an armed robbery plot  in St.Petersburg, Florida involving Jennifer Mee, a girl who made headlines for uncontrollable hiccups and two other men.

Merritt says he and his  brother Shannon Griffin grew up and went to school in Petal until Shannon left Petal High School in the tenth grade, then moved to Florida for a fresh start.

Shannon's brother says they were actually expecting him home for a family get together when they received the news about his death.

"I got a call from both my parents 8 o'clock Sunday morning. It was pretty tragic to hear about it. It shook us all up. It shook the entire family up," said Merritt.

According to Merritt, Shannon may have been in a dating relationship with Jennifer Mee who he met online and only knew her for a few days.

"As far as he was concerned he was going to meet her for a date, and that when he got there she lured him behind this abandoned house or whatever and there were two guys behind the house waiting on him," said Merritt.

Merritt says he and his family are devastated about the death of Griffin, and they are frustrated that his death is being over shadowed by the "hiccup girl." Someone who is allegedly responsible for Griffin's death.

"What is her focus on it?  She set up an innocent man to murdered, to be robbed at gun point and to be murdered. All you (media) can talk about is the girl with hiccups. He has a family too and his family is grieving right now," said Merritt.

Merritt says the family is planning Griffin's funeral for Saturday. The family also has a benefit account in Shannon Griffin's name at Bancorp South Bank for donations to help with his funeral arrangements.
