NACOGDOCHES, TX (KLTV) - The National Alliance on Mental Illness in Nacogodoches teamed up with the Stephen F. Austin social work department to promote awareness in the community.

East Texans came out for the first walk/run at T.J.R. elementary to raise money for the organization.  The funds will help support the Rusk State Hospital, and educational materials on mental illnesses.

"It's for education, it's for advocacy and what we are striving so hard now is to remove the stigma of mental illness," said NAMI secretary Jenarie Alexander.

Organizers say they hope people can become educated on the major brain disorders, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. They stress people of any age, with no family history can be affected.
