Crews fighting grass fire

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Crews from at least two fire departments are working to contain a grass fire.

The fire started around six Thursday night.

Firefighters from Lindale and Dixie fire departments have been called to fight the blaze.

The fire is located near CR 489, which is off of 69, in the Swan community.

Authorities tell KLTV 7 that the property owner told them a brush fire got out of hand, spreading to a nearby property that is used to store railroad cross-ties.

Crews sprayed trees down with water and used a bulldozer to build a fire line.

Because of chemicals on the burning cross-ties, authorities say they are going to have to let the fire burn itself out.

Crews will be back on the scene in the morning to try to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality has also been called in to check the area to make sure no chemicals contaminate soil or nearby water.
