Loop 49 Leads to Demolition of Old Fire House

Sometimes, the first step of construction is destruction.

The walls came down in Noonday Wednesday as crews demolished the old Noonday Volunteer Firehouse in the name of progress. The new Outer Loop 49 will run right through the old fire station's location.

TXDOT Area Assistant Engineer, Veron Webb says construction on the long awaited highway will start next week. "It's going to add an east west corridor for the traffic and hopefully releive some of the congestion on Loop 323. Eventually, going all the way to I-20, it will really give us a bypass around Tyler."

The first phase of Loop 49 will connect South Highway 69 with Highway 155. That is expected to be completed by 2006. The Loop 49 project has been in planning since the late 1960s.
