Gilmer Independent School District 'Pinks Out'

By Jamey Boyum - email

GILMER, TX (KLTV) - Even with two brain surgeries and fifteen months of chemotherapy, second grader Allison Wright still has a brain tumor and her medical bills are mounting.

This month is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, which gave some Gilmer Independent School District employees an idea. They started a week long coin drive, culminating in "Pink Out Day" to help out Allison and her family. Almost everyone in the school participated.

Allison Wright has courage. She has the courage to act like any other second grader at Gilmer Elementary, despite the fact that she has a stubborn brain tumor. Surgeries have reduced it by 65%, but the Chemo has not shrunk the remainder and its effecting her vision. But, her teachers are working with her to make sure she goes on to third grade.

She says, " My favorite thing about school is coming in the first year and making new friends and learning new things."

The new thing she learned this week is she has a lot of pink friends. Even some of the boys, but those who just can't wear pink had a choice.

"If you don't want to wear pink you can compromise and wear red," She stated. And the money seems to keep coming in. "My friend Garrett gave me two dollars that I can put in the jug," she said.

Assistant Principal Wendi Jordan seems to have a new best friend. She says," When I went to her and told her stories of what people have done for her, her first thing was, oh my family will appreciate that. Its not about her, its about her family."

"For me it means I'll have to go home and make a big card thanking them for supporting me. I want to put on the card thanks for all your help for me and my family," Allison said.

Allison is not only big on courage…she has a big heart…her sisters think so too.

An area bank is counting up the change collected and additional donations can be made at Gilmer National Bank… Allison will be riding in the Yamboree Parade Friday morning at eleven.
