UPSHUR COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - GILMER, TX (KLTV) - It was a remarkably calm and organized meeting Friday morning in Upshur County, after a fire storm of protests over last month's ruling on public speaking.
The Upshur County Commissioners Court voted 3 - 1 last month to stop hearing public comments at meetings.
The court heard repeated criticism from citizens over the past several months on the performance of various county officials.
Friday a commissioner did propose to re-instate public comment, but it failed.
"If they are silenced on their true opinions on how their government is functioning, it to me is censorship," said Scott Rose, who supports public comments.
"It's a disgrace to this court for people to run around here with duct tape on their face," said Joe Ferguson, am Upshur County commissioner. "I mean, this is commissioners' court, and I'm totally against it."
There was no motion to discuss or bring back public comments at any future date.
