TYLER, TX - The ETMC Regional Healthcare System has been working diligently for the past few years to bring a new physicians office building to the ETMC campus at Cedar Creek Lake. Today, Wednesday, Oct. 12, marks the official groundbreaking in that long sought-after effort.

"We are so pleased to celebrate the coming expansion of physician services with this groundbreaking," said Elmer G. Ellis, president and CEO of the regional healthcare system. "The new medical office building to house Lakeland Medical Associates will be a welcome expansion to ETMC Cedar Creek Lake, with a design that will meet today's patient needs plus continued growth."

According to Robert Layton, corporate director of plant services for the ETMC Regional Healthcare System, the 10,000-square-foot facility will be located on the northeast corner of ETMC Cedar Creek Lake.

"It's going to be set back to coordinate that facility with a future expansion of our existing building, to allow the doctors to have their own freestanding building that we can easily service," said Layton.

The physicians' office building will be leased by Lakeland Medical Associates, a private Athens-based physicians group which already has three doctors based in Gun Barrel City: Steven Koerth, MD; Wally Mahmoud, DO; and Jon Rich, DO.

"They're there full time and have hospital admission privileges, so they provide service not only in their offices but also at ETMC Athens," said Dr. Doug Curran of Lakeland Medical Associates. "That's important for patients who want doctors who can follow them all the way in the hospital."

Curran said the group has plans to place a fourth doctor in the new physicians building next summer and a fifth the summer after that.

"The goal has always been to do what's best for the community," said Curran. "We've had a wonderful relationship with ETMC; they've always done what they've said they would do and had the best interest of the people in the community in mind."

The physicians building will have space to house up to six doctors and will include its own X-rays and laboratory.
