LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - There's a strange new twist in the multimillion-dollar story of sinking dirt along 98th street. The city has set aside nearly $8 million to fix the problem, which is blamed on a late 1990's sewer project. The sinking dirt had damaged stretches of pavement along 98th street and threatens to damage homes.
But here's that strange twist. The city is now selling the very homes it bought along 98th street between Slide & Quaker. The city purchased the homes for their estimated market value or in some cases replacement value plus moving costs.Six of those homes are now up for sale.
Of course there's a catch. The city keeps the land and the house has to be moved. Bid documents say, "The successful bidder will be responsible for the removal of all improvements located on the property, either by moving of the complete structure or by structure demolition, removal, and lot cleanup (after salvage of desired materials, equipment, fixtures, etc.)."
Public records say you can bid on any one of the homes, or all six of them. Likewise, the city can sell the homes separately or all-together. Those same public records say homes "must be removed from site within 90 days".
The homes up for bid are: 9801 Dover Ave, 9802 Dover Ave, 9802 Colton Ave, 9802 Elkhart Ave, 9802 Genoa Ave, and 9801 Colton Ave.

On Thursday City Council is expected to approve the buyout of 8 more homeowners (for a total of 23 homes), with agreed payments as follows:
- $153,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Christopher Gray and Kap Pun Gray for the acquisition 9802 Bangor Avenue.
- $156,500, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Lindsey H. Williams for the acquisition of 9802 Clinton Avenue.
- $157,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Betzabe E. Ibarra for the acquisition of 9801 Bangor Avenue.
- $91,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Kim R. Craig, d/b/a Kim Craig Construction, for the acquisition of 9801 Huron Avenue.
- $142,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Lynn Bolton and wife, Christi Bolton, for the acquisition of 9802 Belmont Avenue.
- $125,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Russell Michael DeWaters for the acquisition of 9802 Beaufort Avenue.
- $158,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to Bonnie E. Jackson for the acquisition of 9801 Beaufort Avenue.
- $133,000, plus moving expenses and closing costs to William C. Lowrie and wife, Judy Lowrie, for the acquisition of 9801 Clinton Avenue
