Firefighters battle more brush fires

By Bob Hallmark - bio | email

LONGVIEW,TX (KLTV)- It was a busy day for east Texas firefighters who could hardly contain area brush fires before being called to others. It began around noon when volunteer fire crews responded to two separate fires in East and West Mountain. Reinforcements were called when two more fires in Ore city and Big Sandy broke out an hour later. The continued dry spell saw brush fires hit hard and fast. Three volunteer departments, White Oak, Glenwood and East Mountain, scrambled to the largest blaze near East Mountain.

Firefighters battled the wind aided flames as they moved towards a heavily wooded area. Leaving water tankers as their only defense.

"That's the biggest challenge is getting water having it available for us, because most all of the truck carry only about 300 gallons and they don't last too long," says Terry Conyers of the Glenwood volunteer fire department.

"We had several cars involved in fire, and fire out into the woods," Conyers says.

No one was at the residence when crews arrived, who were able to halt the flames just inches away from a nearby home.

"We try to get to the head of it and knock it down," says East Mountain volunteer fire department assistant chief Dusty Williams.

Numerous cars, a bus, even oil drums fueled the fire, spreading as it burned through dangerous materials.

"It had a lot of fuel back here , oil , tires, the woods, plus you had the tires burning and hazard from smoke off of those" Conyers says.

Upshur county does not currently have a burn ban unlike other counties and investigators believe this fire may have been started by an unattended trash fire. And just as they doused this blaze, crews had already left for another fire.

"Everyday, sometimes two or three a day," Williams says.

Those same fire crews also handled the fire in Big Sandy, they tell us all fires are currently contained.

The John Tyler Lions always seem to look sharp in their uniforms. But thanks to East Texas lawyer Keith Miller, the Lions will look better and play safer. Helmets that advertise lowering the impact of hits, and possibly reduce the amount of concussions, come with a hefty price-tag. Miller's donation of 7,500 dollars, will go to help the lions cover that cost. "Keith Miller's been a big sponsor of John Tyler High School football program for years now.  I know it's...More >>
