Austin police chief pushing for new drunk driving category

AUSTIN, TX (KLTV/ABC) - The Austin police chief is pushing for a new drunk driving category in Texas.

Chief Art Acevedo's plan would target those who have had a couple drinks, but are not yet legally drunk. "People need to understand impairment starts with the first drink," Acevedo said.

It would be called Driving While Ability Impaired (DWAI) and would apply to those with a blood alcohol level of .05 and .07. The current DWI limit is .08.

The police chief says that his plan would help keep track of the repeat offenders who often plead to lesser offenses - like reckless driving or disorderly conduct.

While many agree cracking down on drunk driving is good, some say the plan is too extreme.
