Perry leads White in final month of governor's race

Statewide poll numbers shows that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Bill White still trails Republican Governor Rick Perry by five points.

The 2010 Texas Lyceum Poll shows the incumbent leading the challenger 48% - 43% among likely voters. Among self-identified independent voters, the former Houston mayor leads Perry 50% to 34%, with Libertarian Kathie Glass gathering 10% support.

Moderate voters also prefer White over Perry, by almost a three-to-one margin. Perry, however, dominates conservative voters, locking in more than 80% of the Republican vote. The poll was conducted Sept. 22 - 30.
