WINONA, TX (KLTV) - WINONA, TX (KLTV) - Some East Texas school district administrators had to pay off a bet with students in an unusual way Friday.
Principal Leland Hand and staff members of Winona High School challenged their student body to achieve exemplary status, and if they did he and the staff would swallow live goldfish.
The kids followed through with their end of the deal so Friday Principal Hand and his staff kept their end of the bargain, too. Hand says it is a small price to pay to bring the once trouble school to new heights.
"Not enough words can express where these kids have come from, said Hand. "From being a school that had a state technical assistance team come out we were really struggling and to see them get to exemplary status and being the only one in the Smith County area to get exemplary high school, it's phenomenal. Great job by the teachers and kids."
Hand says the goldfish tasted a lot like chicken.
