TYLER, TX (Tyler-PD) - The City of Tyler Police Department received notification yesterday that they have been awarded a grant from the United States Department of Justice COPS Hiring Program (CHP) for four police officer positions. The estimated federal funding to be awarded over the three-year grant period is $853,988.

"We were very pleased to hear that we had received this award when Sen. John Cornyn called to share the good news yesterday," commented Police Chief Gary Swindle. "The grant will allow us to expand our community policing program which is focused on crime prevention."

Currently, the City of Tyler has 187 officers and the additional four officers will bring the total to 191. The new officers will be assigned to the Community Response Unit which provides community policing. The Unit consists to six officers and will grow to 10 with this grant.

Community response officers (CROs) work exclusively in a specific geographic area and help address community concerns as well as establish crime prevention practices. They act as a liaison between the neighborhoods and the Police Department as a whole.

"Currently, we have six geographical beats within the city. These additional officers will allow us to now expand that structure to 10 geographic coverage areas that will include a specific downtown beat," added Swindle. "By increasing the number of beats, the geographic size of each beat will be smaller. This will allow the beat officer to become more familiar with their assigned area and establish stronger relationships with the residents and businesses in the area."

The recruitment for the new officers will begin in the next few weeks with the scheduling of a civil service test to identify potential candidates for the positions. For information about the test, please visit www.cityoftyler.org.

This was the second year that the City of Tyler applied for the COPS grant. Originally the application was submitted in 2009 and was unsuccessful. When the opportunity was presented again in 2010, the City elected to reapply.
