Tire recycling, light bulb exchange part of Longview's citywide cleanup

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Released by the City of Longview:

LONGVIEW, TX - The City of Longview and Keep Longview Beautiful will host the Citywide Cleanup, Tire Recycling, and Light Bulb Exchange from 8:00 a.m. – Noon, Saturday, October 2, 2010. The purpose of the events is to encourage residents to help improve the Longview community by removing litter and eliminating junk tires.

According to Community Relations Coordinator Mary Jane Burnett, "The Citywide Cleanup is a special event that we hold twice a year to encourage residents to help clean our community, but people can volunteer anytime throughout the year. Within the past two months we have been fortunate to have several new volunteer groups participate in one-time park projects or become an Adopt A Street or Park sponsor. No matter when people choose to volunteer, they can help make a difference."

Citywide Cleanup volunteers are encouraged to clean the street or park of their choice. Volunteers can register, receive supplies, and enjoy refreshments at the event kickoff, which will be held from 8:00 – 9:00 a.m. at the Longview Public Library, 222 W. Cotton St. Citywide Cleanup volunteers are invited to a "Reporting Party" at 11:00 a.m. after the cleanup, where participants can report volunteer results and enjoy lunch.

Tire Recycling will be held across from the Longview Public Library, 222 W. Cotton St. Tire Recycling is limited to Longview residents and non-commercial users only. To participate in tire recycling, please bring proof of Longview residency.

The Light Bulb Exchange is a special event that will be held in conjunction with the Citywide Cleanup at the Longview Public Library. Longview residents may trade up to 4 incandescent light bulbs per family in exchange for 4 energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. The new bulbs are 19 Watt, which is comparable to a 60 – 75 Watt incandescent. The Light Bulb Exchange is made possible by a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's EECBG program.

To volunteer, contact the City of Longview Volunteer Center at 903-237-1390. For more information about these or other events, visit LongviewTexas.gov.
