1 dead, 1 hospitalized in Tyler crash

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - A grandmother is dead and her husband hospitalized after a crash took place at the intersection of Loop 323 and Highway 271 in Tyler on Wednesday. Police say she and her husband were in town from Indiana visiting their granddaughter at UT Tyler.

According to Don Martin with the Tyler Police Department, Clarence Bechdol, 79, and Margarett Bechdol, 80, were traveling in their gray 2007 Chevy Trail Blazer southbound on Highway 271. They tried to turn left onto 323 at a yellow blinking light. A man driving northbound in a 2008 Ford F-350 pick-up truck on 271 had a green light and crashed into them. Police say Mr. Bechdol was determined to be at fault in the crash for Failure to Yield Right of Way Left Turn.

Mrs. Bechdol was taken to East Texas Medical Center where she died from injuries sustained in the crash. Mr. Bechdol was also taken to ETMC for non-life threatening injuries.

The driver of the truck, John Ainsworth of Longview, was not injured say police.
