Four Injured As Truck Hydroplanes

Wet weather is to blame for another traffic accident on Interstate 20 Sunday afternoon.

According to the Department of Public Safety, an eastbound truck hydroplaned and lost control Sunday afternoon shortly before five. The truck skidded across the grassy median and struck an oncoming car on the westbound side.

The driver of the car was airlifted to a local hospital, and three others were taken by ambulance. Westbound interstate traffic was delayed for an hour by the airflight helicopter.

DPS says in spite of the distance he hydroplaned, the driver of the truck was not necessarily breaking the posted speed limit.

"He claimed that he was not speeding," explained Trooper Ricardo Fabbiani. "It was believable, because if you were doing the speed limit, it's very easy to hydroplane here."

"It's best to slow down below the speed limit because of weather conditions," he warns.

The Winona Volunteer Fire Department also assisted with freeing the people from their cars, and handling traffic.
