2-year-old drowns in Tyler pool on birthday

TYLER, TX (KLTV) -

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas 2-year-old has drowned in a backyard pool in Tyler. It happened around 2 p.m. Monday in the 3700 block of Arlington Avenue.

Tyler Police say Ava Faith Ayers, 2, and her 3-year-old sister, Zoe, were with a 16-year-old babysitter when the drowning took place. They say Ava slipped out the back door of the home and fell into the pool when the babysitter was distracted.

EMS responded to the home. The toddler was taken to Mother Frances where doctors tried to revive her.

Today was Ava's birthday.

Neighbors say Ava and Zoe were biological sisters and were both adopted by Jay and Christine Knight. Zoe was adopted at infancy and Ava about one year ago. Neighbors say the Knights had been wanting children for a long time and were overjoyed when Ava and Zoe came into their lives. The family attends Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler. They had only lived in their home on Arlington Avenue about a year say neighbors.

Please leave your condolences for the family in the comments section below.
