Proud of East Texas: Dr. Syntha West

By Joan Hallmark - bio | email

At the age of 71, Dr. Syntha West could be described as a cover girl for the slogan "it's never too late". At the age of 60, West entered and won the "Ms. Texas Senior Classic" and in 2008 won the "Ms. Texas Senior America" pageant. She's the only woman to have won both titles.

Last year at the age of 71, West was invited to perform a twirling routine at the Baylor Homecoming game. She had been a Golden Girl at Baylor over 50 years ago.

Until she reached 60 and began entering pageants, West's life was consumed with education and family. But along her way, she earned her PH. D., counseled hundreds of high school students, and now counsels children caught between their divorcing parents. Where counseling and pageants may seem a contrast, she says they compliment each other. Using her personality,(she was voted Miss Congeniality at both pageants) West travels around the state giving motivational speeches and entertaining with her music and twirling.
