SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas toddler is still in critical condition Wednesday night after shooting himself in the head.

Around noon Wednesday, Smith County sheriff's deputies were called to the shooting at the Sports Club on Highway 31 west.

Authorities say that two-year-old Jayden McLean was being watched by his grandmother Chanda McLean. She owns the Sports Club with her husband and was home with the toddler when the bartender at the club called her.

Apparently, the bartender needed to leave so Chanda replaced him and took her grandson with her. Authorities say she was working at the front bar when the two-year-old wandered into the back office.

"There was a gun on the table," said Smith County Sheriff J.B. Smith. "The baby evidentially crawled up on the table and shot itself in the head with the weapon."

Jayden was airlifted to Children's Medical Center in Dallas, where he is listed in critical condition.

This is not the first tragedy the McLean family has suffered. The two-year-old's uncle is Dexter McLean. He is the East Texan that was murdered two years ago, and the sheriff's department is still working his case.

"So they've had dual tragedies now in a very short period of time," said Smith.

The sheriff said this kind of accident has never happened at a club in Smith County. The Smith County Sheriff's Department will continue to investigate.

So far no charges been filed.

Sheriff Smith says the case will be turned over to the District Attorney's office to investigate and determine if any criminal charges will be filed.
