Released by the Texas Department of Public Safety:
AUSTIN – Tropical Storm Hermine is predicted to spawn heavy rains – and possibly flash floods – in widespread areas across Texas. Many flood related deaths in Texas could be avoided if drivers would turn around and choose a different route when they see water across a road.
Night time driving makes it especially difficult to judge how deep water may be. Flash floods involve rising waters that can become much deeper very rapidly as a car attempts to cross a flooded area of a street or roadway.
Nearly eight of every ten vehicle-related flood fatalities in Texas occurred between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. Day or night, the best advice is this: when there's water on the road: Turn Around, Don't Drown.
