Born in Saratoga, Texas September 12th, 1931, George Jones sang for tips as a boy on the streets of Beaumont, honed his craft in Texas honky tonks, and became today what is often called "the greatest living country singer."
But Jones' career was not without its' ups and downs. Throughout his long career, Jones has made headlines as much for his bouts of drinking, stormy relationships with women, and violent rages, as for his many hit songs.
George Jones and Tammy Wynette were married in 1969. Their stormy marriage ended in 1975. Jones says after his divorce from Wynette, he turned even more to drinking and began to use cocaine. Eleven years ago with the help of his fourth wife and manager Nancy, Jones quit drugs, drinking, and smoking.
After Tammy Wynette's death in 1998 at age 55, George and his daughter by Wynette, became even closer and today are each others biggest supporters. George Jones has two sons and one other daughter by other marriages.
