Tiny East Texas school could win $500,000

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) - A tiny East Texas school is asking for our help in a Facebook contest that could earn them a $500,000 and a new campus.

The student body of Lucas Christian Academy of Collin County was at LeToureau University Friday trying to generate votes.

A Facebook contest sponsored by Kohl's will give the top 20 vote getters $500,000, and the academy, with only 276 students, is the only Texas school left in the nation-wide competition.

They have good reason to want to win the money.

"We're actually in rented buildings at this point and we have completely maxed out our facility," said Lucy Allen, Lucas Christian Academy Dean. "We have no room. The halls are crowded. We have to use a bus as our locker room."

"Governor Perry has urged all Texans to vote for Lucas Christian Academy," said Bryan Hughes, State Representative, District 5. "I'm trying to do my part. It's nice because they're the only Texas school involved and we want to bring this home to Texas."

Voting ends at midnight Friday night, and winners will be announced September 7th.
