LIBERTY COUNTY, GA (WTOC) - A two-year-old boy is fighting for his life after police say his babysitter abused him. Police say they were called to a home on Enterprise Drive around 9:30 a.m. on Monday. They found a toddler unresponsive with serious head injuries.

EMT's were headed to Liberty Regional Hospital when they decided the child needed to be air lifted to Memorial University Medical Center. The toddler was immediately taken into surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

Twenty-nine-year-old Christian Ballard was arrested on Monday afternoon and charged with cruelty to a child. Ballard reported to police he dropped the child. Ballard is the boy's aunt's boyfriend.

The boy's mother, 27-year-old Vanessa Garcia, was at work when the incident happened. The whereabouts of the boy's aunt, 30-year-old Lea Dubray, during the incident are still unknown.

Ballard and Dubray live with Garcia on Enterprise Drive.

Ballard had his first hearing on Tuesday. A judge set his bond at $25,000.

The toddler is in critical but stable condition.

Hinesville Police Detective Melvin Kesner said old bruises marred the boy's skin, but that he was well-fed and clothed and otherwise appeared to be healthy.
