Man burned while working on car's gas tank

LONGVIEW, TX (KLTV) -

Released by the Longview Fire Department:

LONGVIEW, TX - An East Texas car owner sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his arm while working on gas tank.

At or around 0907 am the Longview Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire in the 1400 block of Lake Dr. The owner of the Toyota Celica was removing the fuel pump from the gas tank when it caused a spark igniting the fuel in the tank. The battery was still connected when the fire occurred. The fire was extinguished with no damage to any other structures.

The owner of the car was treated on the scene; he refused to be transported to a hospital by LFD medics on scene.

The car was a total loss. The cause of fire is unintentional, but preventable by removing all potential ignition sources in the area including disconnecting the electrical system from the battery prior to doing any work on the vehicle.
