SUMTER, SC (WIS) - The mother of three Sumter County children found living in dismal, dank, and disgusting conditions last week has been charged with unlawful conduct toward a child, according to deputies.
Law enforcement responded to 31-year-old Alison Alsbrooks Scurry's house on August 24 after receiving an anonymous complaint of possible child neglect due to unsuitable living conditions.
Upon entry, deputies discovered approximately 10-12 inches of household garbage including rotting food, clothes, toys and assorted household items thrown. Scurry and her three children -- ages eight, nine and 10 -- were living among the garbage.
"She basically stated that the situation became one where she was overwhelmed as a single parent trying to work and kind of do it all," said Melissa Addison from the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
The children are reportedly in good condition. The oldest child is staying with a relative, and the two younger children are in foster care.
Scurry's next court appearance is Nov. 1.
