PALESTINE, TX (KLTV) - An East Texas woman is $1,001,180 richer after hitting it big five times in a row. Brenda Richardson is still riding her week-long winning streak.
"It couldn't have happened to a better person," said Tammy Stock, manager of J.J.'s Corner Store in Palestine. Nearly one week ago, Stock sold a lottery ticket worth $1 million--a twenty-dollar Blockbuster ticket.
Brenda Richardson, a J.J.'s regular, bought that ticket. "I don't know how many times I looked at it," she said. "I stopped long enough to look up and say, 'Dear Lord, just keep me calm.'"
Last week, Richardson took a break from work, ran some errands and stopped off at her favorite convenience store to pick up her favorite scratch off.
Earlier that week, Richardson scratched off and won $30. She'd later win $50, then $100.
"[I] was pretty happy with that," she said.
She played again and won $1,000.
"My mind is going, 'Do I dare get another one?'" she recalled. "You got this $1,000 one in your purse. What's another $20?'" she said.
So she bought another scratch-off. She scratched the ticket from top to bottom.
"[It was] not looking too good for me until I get to the bottom and I see one of my numbers matches," said Richardson. "I scratched the amount and I see it's not a number, it's M-I-L."
Richardson put the ticket in her purse and went back to work. She says she was not convinced until she went home and showed her husband.
"He said, 'You won $1,000,000.' I said, 'We won $1,000,000.'"
Richardson said she's worked in education for more than 30 years. She's retired, but was working part-time for Palestine ISD. She resigned, Monday.
"[I want to] just relax and invest some, and help my children out and be sensible," she said. "I feel blessed."
Richardson said Uncle Sam already got his cut of the $1,000,000.
She and her husband are now making travel plans to visit family in Colorado.
