Katrina evacuees reflect 5 years later

By Brittany Pieper – email

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) –

Elora and Jeremy Edward didn't think they would ever live anywhere besides New Orleans, but when Hurricane Katrina hit everything changed.  Now, they call Shreveport home.

"It was a very scary time, but I knew when we left New Orleans that I wouldn't see New Orleans for awhile. I just had a feeling in my heart that this time it was different," said Elora Edward.

After the Hurricane, she spent a few weeks at LSUS, and then 3 more months living at Providence Church. At the time, she and her now husband, Jeremy, were saving up for a wedding. When Katrina hit they were left with no where to live and no jobs.

"In one day it all changed. All the money we had we had to use it to live on. All the hopes and dreams that we had was changed," said Elora.

Elora and Jeremy decided not to have their big dream wedding. They planned a simple ceremony, but members of the church they were staying at had a different idea.

"Members of the church actually decided, oh no, you can't have that. We're gonna have a wedding here, and they started putting everything together and decided to throw us a real wedding," said Jeremy.

Then, when they didn't know where they would live, the church provided a free trailer for a year. Jeremy found a job with the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Department.

"The hurricane, for so many people was just devastating. For us, it was devastating, but we've been blessed. We have been blessed," said Elora.

While they miss New Orleans, the Edwards say through all of the trials Katrina brought they've found a place to call home.

When the town of Gilmer is mentioned in relation to sports, the Buckeyes powerhouse football program immediately comes to mind. And that's fair considering they have won three state titles and racked up 13 double digit win seasons since 2000. But a small 1A school about nine miles away deserves some attention these days as well.
