TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The First Church Of Christ, Scientist in Tyler has finally gotten the nod to re-build after arsonists set it ablaze January 17th.
Jason Robert Borque and Daniel George McAllister were arrested and charged with arson last February, charged with burning a church and nine others around East Texas.
The walls of the structure still stand and are sound enough for re-building. Scotty Hanson, a member of The First Church Of Christ, Scientist, is also a the contractor on the job.
"We've got a partial construction of steel and wood and so we're going to clean out the steel…and we've got the engineers working on the new roof structure and we'll put it back just like it appeared," he said. "I think it was built in 46'-47', right after WWII. We were very fortunate not to have extensive damage to the outside of the property."
The inside just looks dirty and it is all because of the walls.
"It's stucco," he said. "It's just in immaculately good shape."
Hanson says that you just can't burn stucco.
"We'll get this all cleaned out in the next couple of days," he said. "It's a disaster…but it's not a major overhaul. I've been in construction all my life and it's just an easy job. Nasty, but easy."
It is easy because older brick is thicker and more stable than newer brick and the walls are basically made of dirt.
Hanson was concerned about the stability of a wall and damage to the fireplace, but a brick contractor said they are also easy fixes. A crane will be used to put the roof in place once it is finished.
