TYLER, TX (KLTV) - During World War II, most women in the military were assigned to desk jobs. This was not the case for military nurses like Doris Rooney.
Rooney worked on a hospital train carrying wounded soldiers from the front lines to a Paris hospital. Although the train was bedecked with hospital symbols and supposed to be free from attack, one attack particularly destroyed the entire train, except for the dining car which was protected by a cement overpass where it was parked. Doris and the other nurses in that car escaped injury.
In spite of the danger, Doris was happy in her work, happier still when she met a young American soldier, Eugene Rooney, with an Irish gift for gab. They were married in Paris, twice in one day in fact, a Catholic and a Civil service, and even a honeymoon on the French Riviera as the war wound to a close.
Eugene Rooney died in 1974. Now at the age of 89, Doris Rooney looks back at a full, rich life of no regrets, knowing she helped so many in times of war.
