TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The man facing off against the longest serving governor in state history was in East Texas Wednesday, taking his message straight to the people.
Bill White, the Democratic candidate for governor, stopped for lunch at Luby's in Tyler.
The son of two school teachers stressed the importance of education and the men and women who teach it.
Afterwards, White addressed the governor's request for his tax records before scheduling a debate and the hot topic of immigration.
"It's just an excuse," said White. "He does not want to be held accountable. He does not want to have to answer for the $18,000,000,000 budget hole. He does not want to explain the problems with my plan...I've had more law enforcement report to me than anyone else over the last decade and I'll tell you this. We need more boots on the ground and I will be effective in getting those resources from the federal government."
Close on the heels of his opponent's visit, Governor Perry has scheduled an East Texas stop on the campaign trail. The governor is speaking at a grassroots event next Wednesday in Tyler.
