Stabbing victim lied to protect friend's girlfriend say police

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Released by the Tyler Police Department:

TYLER, TX - UPDATE 08/17/10 - The victim in this case, Ronnie Melton, admitted to investigators Monday that he and his friends lied to police about how, where and why this stabbing took place.

Melton related that he was really stabbed by his friend's girlfriend at an undetermined address in Smith County over a dispute over some car keys. After the stabbing, he and his friends made up the story about him being stabbed by an unknown black male because they didn't want the girlfriend getting in trouble.

The investigation is still ongoing. Individuals involved in this incident will likely face criminal charges including Aggravated Assault, False Report to a Peace Officer and Fail to Report a Felony.

Man Stabbed at Lake Tyler

On August 15, 2010 at about 2:45 a.m. the Tyler Police Department received a telephone call from the Trinity Mother Frances hospital regarding an individual that had been stabbed. Tyler police officers contacted the victim, identified as Ronnie Melton, 23, from Van in the hospital's emergency room. While speaking with Mr. Melton, officers learned that he had been stabbed several times by an unknown black male while talking with some people in the parking lot area of Hillcreek Park (Lake Tyler). Mr. Melton was unable to provide any information regarding the suspect's identity or the reason for the attack. Following the incident Mr. Melton was transport to the hospital by private vehicle where he was admitted and received treatment for serious, but non life-threatening injuries.

Crimestoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information that leads to the arrest and charges filed against the suspects in this case, or any, felony case.
