Dead fetus found at scene of brutal assault

BOWMAN, SC (WIS) - Orangeburg County deputies investigating a vicious assault in a Bowman field early Friday morning made an even more gruesome find -- a human fetus.

Sheriff Larry Williams told the Orangeburg Times & Democrat the fetus was found in a field near the Allen Murray Club. "I know this sounds like an indescribable situation, but that's what it is," Williams told the newspaper.

Investigators found the deceased 21-week-old fetus after a 53-year-old Harleyville man told them he had been left for dead in the field after an assault by several people.

The man told police a woman offered to have sex with him, so he parked his vehicle in the field. According to the incident report, once he got his pants off two men opened the door and grabbed him by the neck.

The report says the two men stomped and beat the Harleyville man around the face, and choked him while saying, "Go to sleep, go to sleep," according to the report. The attack relented once the Harleyville man played dead.

According to the report, the men sped off in his Tahoe, and the Harleyville man told deputies he could hear the woman telling the assailants, "You could have waited."

So far investigators aren't sure if the assault had been pre-planned. They also don't know the identity of the mother of the fetus, or whether the woman involved in the assault was the mother.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on the fetus later this weekend. If you have any information on the people involved in the attack or the dead fetus, call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC.
