LUFKIN, TEXAS (KLTV) - It has been a great few years for Lufkin football.
If you talk just about the regular season.
"And we have not played good football the past years although we have been winning games," said head coach John Outlaw, "I want to go deep again, this group of kids wants to go deep, and fortunately this community wants to go deep."
The historically dominant Panthers have been just that, up until the post-season.
The Panthers have not made it out of the 2nd round since 2005, when they went to the state semi-finals.
"I can bet you that the whole town of Lufkin has a chip on their shoulder, and I can assure you that their head coach has a major chip on his shoulder," said Outlaw, "Because we have not been out of the second round in years, that is just not Lufkin football.
If the Panthers want to make that run, they will do so after running the gauntlet during the regular season.
Games with John Tyler, Lee and Longview, as well as a district showdown with The Woodlands awaits.
The Woodlands beat Lufkin last season.
The Panthers start their 2010 campaign on August 27th at Rose Stadium in Tyler against John Tyler.
