KEATCHIE, LA (KSLA) – A massive manhunt led to the capture of a man accused of brutally stabbing his estranged wife and her sister to death early Sunday morning, according to multiple sources.
That six hour search took place in the woods near Highway 172 and State Line Road on the Panola County Line in Desoto Parish.
According to a report in the Times, a deputy had spotted the suspect, Stephen Rivers, 35, walking alongside the road at 7:30 Sunday morning about two hours after the murders. When asked his name he responded "Stephen" before jumping a fence and running into the woods.
The call quickly went out for tracking dogs to aid in the search and he was found just after 11:30 a.m. Rivers reportedly cut himself with the knife forcing EMS crews into action, taking him to LSU Hospital in Shreveport for treatment.
The murders took place in the 1000 block of Speights Road just west of Keatchie about 5:30 Sunday morning. Investigators say, Rivers broke into the house and stabbed his estranged wife, 25-year-old Diana Rivers 14-times. She died at the scene. Her sister, Virginia Knight, 24, also suffered fatal stab wounds.
Lt. Robert Davidson of the Desoto Parish Sheriff's Office reports that six children inside of the home were asleep, but were awakened and two reported seeing Rivers run through the house "bloodied and with a knife."
Rivers and his estranged wife were reportedly scheduled to be in court Tuesday on a child custody issue.
