If you want help, get off the phone says government office

KILGORE, TX (KLTV) - Officials in one East Texas town say the cell phone in your hand can sometimes get a bit out of hand. So they are making it clear - put up, and shut up - but in nicer words. It could be the start of a cell phone revolution.

At the Kilgore Police and Courts building, the signs outside and inside are perfectly clear. If you want help, get off the phone.

Kilgore residents have been on notice for the past few weeks. And while some say it is over the top and inconvenient, others don't mind the rule.

"I think it's fair," said Trey Eckstadt. "They're trying to get their job done...No need to wait on somebody blabbin' on the phone."

But, some say the concept won't work everywhere.

"I think I would be offended if somebody told me they wouldn't serve me because I was on my cell phone," said one resident.

Jeremy Simpson manages a movie theater and says in customer service the customer is always right, within reason.

"If they're slowing the line, I think it should be their decision to move aside and let the other ones go," he said.

Psychology professor Tracey Williams says that leaves plenty of room for a little more cell phone etiquette.

"No shoes, no shirt, no service...I think this is along the same lines...This is saying, 'Hey, we're going to draw the line somewhere,'" said Williams.
