OVERTON, TX (KLTV) - As an Air Force photo journalist, Sam Bas spent 22 years recording history. Bass went into the Air Force in 1953, but it was during the Vietnam War that his most historic photos were taken. As the first military newsman to fly and photograph a B52 mission, Bass's photos were on the cover of Time Magazine and are seen in most books about the Vietnam War.

Two Bronze Stars, Air Medals and the Legion of Merit only begin to tell the story of Bass's time in Vietnam. Two Purple Hearts represent the times he was shot down, once in a light plane and another time in a helicopter.

Looking back on his time in the service, Bass says it look him out of the hills of Tennessee, around the world twice, and into so many countries he's lost count. But best of all, it gave him the opportunity to record history and to live it.
