Gohmert comments on AZ immigration law controversy

PHOENIX, AZ (KLTV) - An East Texas congressman is part of a group of lawmakers going to war with the Obama Administration on the controversial SB 1070 immigration law in Arizona.

More than 80 Republicans in Congress, including Representative Louie Gohmert, have sent a brief to the U.S. Supreme Court, asking it to ignore the Justice Department's effort to block the new law before it goes into effect next week.

Gohmert said Thursday that the law is not unconstitutional, because anyone that is stopped has to be suspected of committing a crime.

"Every law on the books has the possibility for abuse," said Gohmert. "But, the question is, are we going to become a third-world nation where the laws are not enforced? Which is the reason people are having to leave Mexico to come find jobs here. We've been fair and enforce the law across the board in recent years, and in Mexico they don't."

Gohmert also said that he believes more states besides Arizona and Texas will take steps to enact similar immigration laws. He also expects the federal courts to make a decision before the Arizona law goes into effect next week.
