The summer heat is bearing down on east Texas and not a day goes by that we don't see a news story relating to problems from the heat, but one segment of the population that does not have a voice in our news is our pets. This time of year the heat and human neglect will claim the lives of numerous dogs and cats in our area. So with the need to inspire responsible pet ownership, we have selected the various animal humane societies that serve east Texas as KLTV's Community Spotlight for July. The Humane Society of East Texas and the S-P-C-A of East Texas, both located in Tyler and the Humane Society of Northeast Texas in Longview and the Klein Animal Shelter in Jacksonville could all use a helping hand this time of year. East Texas is over-populated with stray dogs and cats and this issue has become a tax burden for our city and county governments. So this problem impacts you whether you are a pet lover or not. You can help any of these organizations with monetary donations and also donations of pet related items and some of them offer pet adoptions as well. Helping care for our furry friends – the animal humane societies in east Texas – KLTV's Community Spotlight for July, making this a Better East Texas.
