86-year-old stuck in attic for 21 hours, firefighters make rescue

NACOGDOCHES, TX (KTRE) - An 86-year-old Nacogdoches man is OK after firefighters managed to save him after he was stuck in his attic for about 21 hours.

According to Fire Captain Larry Hamby, firefighters were called to a home on the 5700 block of East Main Street at around 8:50 a.m. Wednesday after a man discovered his father was stuck in the attic. Hamby said the man had been working on the air-conditioning unit around noon Tuesday when one of his legs fell through the ceiling.

Hamby described the man, later identified as Victor Ray Reese Sr., as being in "great shape" for his age, as he is a former Marine, and seemed to only suffering from disorientation. Hamby said Reese was adamant about not wanting to go to the hospital, but his son talked him into being checked out.

Hamby said it took firefighters about 20 minutes to cut a hole in the ceiling and pull Reese out.

An EMS director says it can get well over 100 degrees in an attic. One can only imagine how that would feel after 21 hours.

"In an attic you could probably get up to around 110 and 115 degrees pretty easily in a short period of time," Robert Ybarbo said.

In Ybarbo's 30 years of treating patients, he's never heard of anyone being trapped in an attic this long. He hopes it never happens again.

"Anyone that's working alone, they need to let someone know where they're at if they're going to be going into a closed space, just like a car the temperature can rise very rapidly," Ybarbo said.
