Missing dog travels 45 miles towards home

GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - Candace Price always warned her fiance to never let Niko off of her leash. That's why he was almost terrified to make the call that the dog had escaped him at South Mountain State Park more than 55 miles away from their home.

For three weeks, Candace drove the 1.5 hours from Gastonia to Burke County almost every day. She put up signs, posters, pictures and got nothing but dead ends in return.

She said she had never have given up looking for her 9-year-old Siberian Husky, nothing could stop her quest to bring Niko home.

Twenty-two days after her precious pet went missing, she got a call from a couple who had found her Niko in a gas station parking lot in Lincolnton, 45 miles away from where she went missing. For those unfamiliar with the geography of this story, Lincolnton is on the way to Gastonia.

"When he called and said he'd found my dog, my knees buckled and I just started sobbing," Candace said of the 3:30 a.m. phone call.

Everyone wonders what happened. How did a dog make it all those miles? Did someone pick her up? The answers will likely never be known. Niko is too busy giving kisses to talk.
