TEACHER'S AIDE SUSPENDED FOR WEARING CROSS TO RECEIVE PAY

A public school teacher's aide suspended without pay for a year for wearing a cross necklace will be paid through August as her lawsuit works its way through a federal court. Brenda Nichol's employer told a federal judge in Pennsylvania that she'll be paid through the remainder of the current school year. Nichol, who works at Penns Manor School District northeast of Pittsburgh, says the ban on religious garb violates her constitutional right to freedom of religious expression. Nichol was suspended last month when she refused to take off or cover up the cross she wears several times a week.
