Murder still haunts east Texas family

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Instead of celebrating this July 4th, an East Texas family is mourning the death of their son and praying his killer is caught soon. On July 4th it will be 2 years since 20-year old Dex McLean was beaten and shot to death inside his family's home.

McLean's family is now offering a $50,000 reward to anyone who provides information leading to an arrest and conviction.

"I don't care what the reason was I just want somebody out there to help," said Dex's brother Dustin McLean.  "I know there's more than one person that knows."

Dustin and Dex's sister Stephanie say their family has been living in fear knowing Dex's killer or killers are still walking the streets. Not to mention, the toll on their health this horrific crime has caused.

"It's just very hard because our dad is getting in bad health too because you know they stole a piece of all of us and we just want justice for him," said Stephanie.

They say Dex was very sweet, fun-loving and had no enemies to their knowledge but around 11 p.m. on July 4th, 2008 someone shot their chocolate lab, broke into the back of their home, and shot Dex in his bedroom. His parents have left it untouched, combing it numerous times for clues.

"You can't sleep and you're always thinking about it,"said Dex's dad Charles McLean. "We take it hard every day. I woke up this morning thinking about what could solve it."

The FBI and Smith County investigators say there have been numerous rumors, lots of people questioned, and they're constantly working this cold case. Though there have been a lot of rabbit trails, the McLean family says they will never rest until his killer is captured.

"He destroyed our family," said Charles.

They need your help to find closure and give Dex the justice he deserves.

You can remain anonymous if you'd like to give any information. Just call the Smith County Sheriff's Department at 903-566-6600 or Crime Stoppers at 903-597-CUFF (2833)

The McLean's also have a website set up with their own hotline, that can be found by visiting a website dedicated to finding Dex's killer: http://www.dexmclean.com/.
