Well here we go again with an east Texas city having to play parent – but this one I actually think is a good idea. The city of Kilgore recently voted to establish a curfew for anyone under the age of 17 to be off the streets by 10:30 on weeknight and midnight on weekends. There have been a slew of reports of vandalism in the Kilgore area and the belief must be that juveniles are behind the destruction, but the root of this again goes back to parents and family members doing their jobs by ensuring the kids in their family are accounted for. Outside of a handful of jobs that have late hours, there really is not a good reason for a 16 year old to be on the streets that late at night. The city is going to try it for a year and check the results but other east Texas cites have had curfews in place for years so they must feel they are working. But honestly, if a kid wants to get into trouble they can still find a way – curfew or no curfew – so parents in Kilgore and for that matter across all of our area, don't rely on the city to watch over your kids. Take responsibility and do a little parenting, one day your kids may even appreciate it and that will make for a Better East Texas.
