Caldwell Zoo to welcome two new creatures, build new exhibit

TYLER, TX (KLTV) - TYLER, TX (KLTV) - The renovation has begun at Tyler's Caldwell Zoo to make room for a "beary" special addition.

Construction just started on a brand new North American Black Bear exhibit. Zoo officials say the 2,000 square foot habitat will be home to two 3-year-old bears - a brother and sister.

Of course, they want to want to make sure everyone can get a good view of the bears, so they are planning to include a huge viewing window.

"It's probably been 35, 40 years since we've had any bears here at the zoo, and they are highly requested by our visitors, so this will give them a new exhibit to come and enjoy while they're here at the zoo," said Hayes Caldwell, the Caldwell Zoo's executive director.

Folks at the zoo say it will take about six months to get the new habitat ready for the bears. They hope to open the exhibit in early spring.
