Body found in Smith County may have been burned

SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - Smith County authorities are still treating the crime as a homicide, and KLTV has uncovered new information suggesting what may have happened to an unidentified black woman whose body was found dumped near a Smith County road.

Authorities would not confirm, or deny the information, but they seemed to be very concerned about some possible evidence KLTV reporter Layron Livingston found after the crime scene tape came down.

Monday, Livingston stumbled across what looked like burned clothing left on the dirt road off County Road 2191.  The burned material appeared to be a woman's bra strap.  The ground around the clothing was also charred in places, suggesting the victim's body may have been burned.

We tried asking a number of sources about the burned clothes, but no one would comment.

Tuesday, Smith County investigators said they were closer to identifying the body.

Investigators contacted Livingston, and asked if he could show them exactly what he saw. Livingston met investigators back out at the crime scene, and showed them the burnt clothes. They would not speak on camera, but wasted no time collecting the evidence.

The woman's body was discovered about 50 feet from the road.

The Smith County D.A.'s Office and its investigators are now involved in the case, which, is still under investigation.
