EAST TEXAS (KLTV) -
Current heat index values are running above 105 degrees in many places this afternoon and have been flirting with the 110 degree mark. Actual air temperatures range from 95 to 100 and will probably warm a couple of degrees before the afternoon is over.
High temperatures today will soar into the upper 90s to close to 100 degrees this afternoon. Those temperatures, combined with the very humid conditions, have led the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory for most of East Texas until 7pm this evening.
A Heat Advisory is issued when the air temperatures and humidity combine to make the heat index above 105 degrees, a dangerous level. We are looking for those values today to be between 105-109 degrees. This will create situations where heat-related illnesses are possible.
A strong ridge of high pressure in the mid to upper levels of the atmosphere will keep control of our weather today, allowing us to heat quickly into the lower 90s by noon. By the afternoon, temperatures will be in the upper 90s to near 100 degrees in most locations.
Everyone is urged to use caution with outdoor activities this afternoon and early evening. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated, stay inside and in air conditioning if possible, check on relatives and neighbors to be sure they are staying safe, and don't forget about your outside pets as well.
