HUGHES SPRING, TX (KLTV) - Commanded by and East Texas farmer, the valor of Hotel Company has become legendary in Marine Corps history. It was from the family farm in Hughes Springs that Mike Jenkins left for war in Vietnam and where he returned afterwards.
During his time in Vietnam, Jenkins was Company Commander of Hotel Company, a group of men who were to distinguish themselves in one of the greatest battles in military history. It was the summer of 1965 and "Operation Starlight" was the first major offensive of the Vietnam War.
Hotel Company ferociously fought the enemy for two days, not even pausing when their ammunition ran out. The Marines won the battle, but with the loss of three quarters of their men. The book "The Magnificent Bastards of Chulal" tells their story with Jenkins as the books main character.
