TYLER, TX (KLTV) - Now that school is out thousands of East Texas children will be looking for a place to hang out with their friends and eat a healthy meal.
The Summer Food Service Program is now under way, feeding any child that needs a lunch.
The lunch is free for some thanks to donations to the East Texas Food Bank. Lunch starts at 11:45 weekdays. To qualify for the program, you have to be 18 or under and be present. They do not check IDs. They do not care what you look like and they do not care how much money your parents make. You just have to be hungry.
"It's important for us to fill this gap while they're out of school, and of course they're very nutritional meals - balanced to U.S.D.A. specs," said Dennis Cullinane, executive director of the East Texas Food Bank.
Lunch is served at 39 locations across East Texas.
"We get up early, clean the house and we just come over here, let them play and they get to eat their lunch," said Anna Molina, a parent. "Then, they're real chill and I get their dinner ready."
It also gives children a chance to catch up with friends they may not see until school starts up again.
The Summer Playground Program also provides supervised fun from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday at select parks. They do crafts, play games and they can learn to play golf!
