Top 50 B-B-Q Spot Is In Tyler

It's official. Texas Monthly Magazine's annual list of the best in barbecue hits the shelves this week at checkout counters near you. One of the chart toppers is right here in Tyler:  Stanley's Famous Pit Barbecue.

Chris Smith bought the place from Mr. Stanley three years ago. Since then, he's added a few new items to the menu, while improving on the old standbys. The "Brother-in-Law" sandwich was one of the main attractions for Texas Monthly.

"Hot link, with a slice of American cheese, chop beef with barbecue sauce on it," describes Smith at the counter of his rustic looking eatery. "Most people don't think about putting cheese on a barbecue sandwich, but it's very good."

The staff follows the same theme. Francis Dwire has worked there for 25 years. While Chef Jai Verrall wasn't even born in a country that serves barbecue. "Grand Cayman Islands. Georgetown, Grand Cayman." says Jai proudly. What's a Grand Cayman Islander know about barbecue? "How to eat it and put it together. I know that much."

Customers say the combination of new and old is working. Lunch time most days finds the dining area full of barbecue lovers. Now they can say their taste in sauce and brisket is approved by Texas Monthly.

"I'm a big fan of Texas Monthly Magazine," says Smith. "So I'm real happy they chose us."

Bob's Barbecue in Henderson also made Texas Monthly's Top 50 list. Thursday, we'll show you some of their secrets to great barbecue on Channel 7 News.

Bodacious Bar-B-Que based in Longview, and Rudy's Barbecue were named two of the top 4 chains in the state. And, the Country Tavern in Kilgore and Big Smith's BBQ in Yantis received honorable mentions.
