SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - SMITH COUNTY, TX (KLTV) - The Smith County Sheriff's Office knocked on more than 200 doors Wednesday morning, checking in on registered sex offenders. It was part of a round-up conducted by the sheriff's office, U.S. Marshals, and several East Texas police departments.
Out of 235 registered offenders in the county, only five were not found at the addresses where they are registered, including one that just recently checked in with the county.
"One of them had reported in March," said Chief Deputy Bobby Garmon, with the Smith County Sheriff's Office. "He's been gone from this location for two years, but he reported in March that he's still there. If we hadn't verified today, we'd think he's still at that location."
Arrest warrants will be issued for those five people who were not found during Wednesday's round-up.
